Power BI Org content packs

Power BI is Generally Available today. One great feature in Power BI is Org content packs.

Content Pack is way for any company to distribute their own dashboards
or reports to their users for consumption through an easy to discover content
gallery.

You no longer need to search your inbox for the email that
you got with the link or invitation or simply not know content available in
rest of the company. Content gallery ( Get Data -> My Organization) makes it
super simple to discover all the BI content that you have access to in one
place.

As a content creator, by packing your content as a content
pack and putting it in the content gallery makes the content discoverable not
just for the present but even for your future audiences.

You can create content packs with just reports or dashboards
& reports. The datasets used by these reports and dashboards are
automatically included.

Any Power BI Pro user can create an Org Content Pack and publish
to Entire tenant or restrict to security group / office 365 group. Any Power BI
Pro user can consume Org Content Pack

Consumers can customize dashboards/reports without affecting
other users/source

Consumers can’t modify the dataset, refresh dataset etc

User level security flows through to On-premise AS

For imported datasets, content pack creator imports the data
and schedules refresh using his/her credentials

Datasets could be in Group space or in My workspace

Creating content pack is super simple. Learn more at https://support.powerbi.com/knowledgebase/articles/651040-introduction-to-organizational-content-packs

Coming this Fall – Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2016

July 13, 2015: Microsoft announced the release of Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2016. Based on previously major releases, we should have the product in our hands this fall.

Key Highlights of Dynamics NAV 2016

Here are some of the key highlights of Dynamics NAV 2016:

  • Built in workflow engine for automating repetitive or manual tasks
  • Electronic Invoicing improvements to make it easier to do
  • Optical Character Recognition (OCR) that will convert paper documents to NAV documents. For example, scanning in purchase orders from vendors
  • Add third party data-sources to be able to update NAV data. For example: exchange rate lookup
  • New phone client that will be able to access Dynamics NAV real-time

Microsoft has chosen Dynamics NAV as the ERP cornerstone for their cloud offerings. You can run NAV on Azure and connect it directly to Microsoft Office 365 through SharePoint for Office 365.

  • Connect to your email and documents on any device anywhere
  • Connect to your ERP on any device anywhere
  • Video conferencing built in
  • Shared calendars
  • Easy setup and management

Furthermore, rather then running the NAV SQL database on a virtual machine (VM), you can now run it on Azure SQL, a relational database-as-a-service offering that provides the following value.

  • Scalable to thousands of databases and any size required
  • Predictable performance that you can dial up or down
  • Availability backed by replicas & uptime SLA
  • Data protection via auditing, restore & geo-replication
  • Programmatic DBA-like functionality for effective development and operational support
  • Self-managed for near zero maintenance

Free Prize – Download “An Introduction To Dynamics AX 2012″ For Free While You Can

When you are first introduced to Dynamics AX, it may seem a little overwhelming because there is so much that it is able to do. It may seem like you’ve been dropped in a completely foreign land, unable to speak the language, and not knowing which direction to start walking in.

It may be even worse if you are in the middle of a software selection where you are looking at a number of different options (including Dynamics AX) because you need to understand what the differences are, and also remember which feature applies to which application. In that case, you are in multiple foreign lands, and no-one is speaking the same language.

You may have picked up a book or two on Dynamics AX to start your self-guided learning, but even then it may be too much because they usually assume that you have had some familiarity with the system, and you still don’t have a basic foundation knowledge. Rather than wanting to read the The Principia : Mathematica, you are at more of a See Spot Run level when it comes to Dynamics AX.

This is what this book is designed to achieve, and is aimed to give you a high level introduction to Dynamics AX. It is split into two parts as well, the first is a general overview of the system, showing you all of the usability features, and the second part is a functional overview that highlights all of the functional features within Dynamics AX. In essence it teaches you the language of this new land, and also gives you a map of the land so that you can then start heading in the direction that is important to you.

Hopefully this guide will help you quickly get comfortable with Dynamics AX and some of its capabilities. As a bonus you can download a copy of the book for free from the BSP website.

Get it while you can – the head squirrel will notice this eventually and put a stop to it.

The Association of Dynamics Professionals - Certification Exam Question Submission

$

Next to the various roles I have been "playing" since I entered the Dynamics world in 1999 a major one is my involvement in the education of my professional fellow (wo)men and of course, and not in the least, myself. As the products keep on evolving there is a never ending need for all of us to get and let ourselves (be) educated. In whatever format, on whatever time. Classroom setup, e-learning, how-to videos, trial & error ... any style or format that fits you best. As many people there are, as many leaning styles there exist. What ever you might tell yourself and others: we cannot do without training. If you think you don't need it, I would tend to think you're not telling the full story. Sure, you might not need others to train yourself, just DIY. But still then, you most probably will be using some kind of resources others created. Manuals, YouTube videos, code examples, presentation slides, etc. The more we move ahead in time, the better we can find a resource that supports best our need to be educated.

Almost simultaneously with the release of NAV 2015 Microsoft announced that they would no longer continue the certification program for Dynamics NAV and Dynamics GP. And as a consequence the classroom training material was also discontinued. Like lightning many of us were struck by this sudden decision, and even though I could fully understand the reasoning behind this, I thought and still am thinking that Microsoft did throw the baby out with the bathwater. Yes, the budgets have been reallocated and we're getting very useful how-to videos, but these are not a full replacement for a classroom training where the group of trainer and students are more than the sum of the individuals.

Nevertheless, as one of the world biggest soccer player ever, Johan Cruyff, says: every disadvantage has its advantage. The void Microsoft has left, triggers others to fill it up. And one of these "others" is the Association of Dynamics Professionals that is picking now up the gauntlet of resurrecting the certification program for Dynamics GP and NAV. And you know, one of the nice things about it is that we can all be part of it. We all are invited to be item writers. Have a look here, at the Certification Exam Question Submission Instructions and Information.
